Shark Finning Sidewalk In Hong Kong

By Matt J. Weiss, December 8, 2010 @ 12:22 PM (EST)

I have seen many disturbing images of shark finning, and I have seen horrifying scenes of countless shark fins drying outside. However, the images I saw of shark fins drying on the sidewalk in Hong Kong on photographer Alex Hofford's blog were stil shocking. Of course, there is the sheer amount of fins on the sidewalk, which makes you think of how many sharks were tragically killed.

I also think that the fact they are lined up on the sidewalk, in open site, and absolutely covering the sidewalk, makes it extra difficult to see these images.  All these sharks died for the fins, which were then literally thrown to the street. Also, as Hofford points out, it shows that vendors have no shame selling shark fins in Hong Kong, and it is completely legal.  Some of Hofford's images make the shark fins lined up on the sidewalk look endless, which makes you wonder...  A video of the shark fin sidewalk taken with Hofford's cell phone is below.
