If you live anywhere along the United States’ East Coast, then you’ve likely had a rough couple weeks with the weather. A massive set of nor’easter storms rocked the U.S. from North Carolina through Maine. And all the way at the top, the storm left a grey seal stranded and injured.
Saco the seal was found in serious condition in Maine and is showing signs of improvement as he recovers at a nearby marine mammal hospital. The plan is to keep Saco at the National Marine Life Center in Bourne, Massachusetts for a recovery period of two months.
“He is doing better and his hydration stats are improving. … He’s not out of the woods yet, but we’re guardedly optimistic at this point,” Kathy Zagzebski, the center’s executive director, told the NH Union Leader.
The young Saco was likely battered and confused by the storm to the point where foraging for food became impossible. He was found with blood in his stool, but fortunately it appears that there is no internal bleeding.
