Scientists Hope To Bring Nutrients To Surface Layer Of Oceans

By Matt J. Weiss, September 4, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

The Discovery channel is going to take you on a journey on board a research vessel in Hawaii. The star of the show? Algae. Part of the new" Discovery Project Earth" series, the show will document oceanopgraphers trying to pump nutrients from cold, deep water into the shallow water.

The reason for the all pumping is hopes phytoplankton will bloom and consume carbon dioxide.

The scientists hope to get a better understanding of how microbial ecosystems respond to large disturbances. However, its no easy task-one pump went out o the first day.
