Scientists Call For Coral Sea To Be Largest Marine Park

By Matt J. Weiss, September 21, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Australia's top marine scientists are calling for the Coral Sea to be an MPA. This would make it the vast area a no take zone, and the worlds largest marine park.

Scientists are concerned about the increasing threats of over fishing and global warming. Coral bleaching has already been noted in the the sea. The Coral Sea is an important habitat for many rare and endangered animals including both hawksbill and green turtles as well as over 20 species of whales and dolphins and even at least 13 seabirds.

A no take zone in the area will help these animals, that although not directly fished, are usually fishing casualties from by-catch.By catch are the animals not being fished for that die and are waisted.
