Robots Map The Sea Floor

By Matt J. Weiss, September 9, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Marine scientists are determined. If they can't do something themselves, they will make something that can. Enter a fleet of new robots that has been constructed to "paint"a picture of the seafloot. The big breakthrough is something called an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) which can both swim in mid water, or hover over the bottom.

There are a whole array of robots that oceanographers hope will fill gaps in knowledge. One robot can withstand the pressure of the deep, seven miles down; one will use only the heat of the cean to motor for thousands of miles, another is shaped like a mola mola and can move through the water at 2.3 miles per hour.

A fleet of underwater, deep sea robots all with different roles and abilities? Seems too cool to be true.
