
The Return of the Blue Groper

Divers in Victoria, Australia should be on the look out for blue groper. This particular groper can grow up to 1 m in length and were common off the Victoria coast in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Sadly, their friendly nature made them an easy catch for spear fishermen and the population declined.
“The fact that we’re seeing them now is very exciting," explained Wendy Roberts of Reef Watch. "It’s like a rare bird reappearing in the forest; it’s very unusual.”
The blue groper can live 35 years and females have the ability to change sex, which they sometimes do when the dominant male in a school dies.
