Record Low Ice Levels Means Bad Day For Polar Bears
The Arctic Sea ice has reached a second lowest level lowest ever on Wednesday, and it is cause for some concern. The first highest, an extreme low set in 2007, could be passed in the next few weeks.
The low ice levels been atributed to anthropomorphically caused changes in the global climate. Why is this so bad? For many reasons, but one of which is for the polar bears.
One area that is very low in ice is in the Chuckchi Sea, where polar bears have been spotted swimming in the open ocean. As the ice melts, polar bears must swim increasingly long distances to reach the next pack of ice for hunting. And while the marine mammal is an excellent swimmer, it simply can't handle such large distances and are drowning. I hate to say it, but things look grim for the polar bear.
