Polar Bears Swimming off Alaskan Coast
By Wendy Heller, August 22, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Scientist witnessed a group of nine polar bears swimming in the open waters of the Chukchi Sea, a sign of even tougher times to come. Bears run high risk of drowning, especially when they are faced with storms.
According to WWF's Arctic Program Polar Bear Coordinator, Geoff York:
“To find so many polar bears at sea at one time is extremely worrisome because it could be an indication that as the sea ice on which they live and hunt continues to melt, many more bears may be out there facing similar risk,”
The impact of climate change on the Arctic is taking a toll on the life it once supported. In 2007 the lowest sea ice coverage in history was recorded, this melting change is only accelerating.
