Samples gathered from the mouths of dolphins are stirring up some buzz about the plethora of species that exist beyond our current comprehension of the phyla bacterial tree. Connecting these previously unidentified dots to create a clearer understanding of bacterial lines is no easy task. Yet, by piecing together small chunks of DNA, a team of researchers can develop a genome profile, which may yield far-reaching implications and thus, innovation to follow.

Professor David Relman of Stanford University's School of Medicine outlines what exactly this discovery could mean to not just dolphins, but marine mammals overall. Similarities are already surfacing with respect to gum disease and the process of denitrification in both humans and dolphins. Advancements like these are crucial stepping stones to understanding the intricacies of a diverse ecosystem like the worlds fragile ocean creatures.
