Philippines To Protect Threser Shark
By Matt J. Weiss, August 28, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
In the Philippines, one of the worlds most biodiverse areas, there is a high amount of fishing for shark meat and fins-especially in Batangas City.
Good news for the thresher shark is that if it is off Bantagas City, it is off the menu. The ordinance passed prohibits taking, catching, selling, purchasing and in any way harming not just thresher sharks but any endangered marine species.
This is huge news as the laws are backed up by hefty fines, and considering the size of the Batangas port, it means a lot of sharks will be saved.
