Pacific Salmon v. Gold
By Wendy Heller, August 24, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Alaskans are faced with one of the most debated campaigns in history. A recently discovered pebble mine is said to hold an invaluable amount of cooper and gold in Bristol Bay. The bay is also home to the pacific salmon which is valued at an estimated $300MM year.
The community is outraged by the plan to retreive any gold or cooper as this would require the use of hazardous chemicals that would permanently damage this ecosystem in which the fish have been reproducing for over thousands of years.
