Simple changes in fishing gear could save tens of thousands of Coral Triangle turtles
New analysis World Wildlife Fund shows that the incorporation of innovative and responsible fishing techniques in the Coral Triangle could save tens of thousands of sea turtles.
The implementation of 'circle hooks' -hooks sharply curved inwards that pose less threat if ingested by marine mammals- makes a strong case to governmental fishing regulators in the region by reducing bycatch up to 80 percent.
"All it takes is a simple change in fishing gear to help reduce marine turtle bycatch, while upholding more efficient and responsible fishing practices," says Keith Symington, WWF Coral Triangle Bycatch Strategy Leader.
Let's hope it is that simple.
