Olympus Gets Back Into The High End Compact Game with the XZ1

By Matt J. Weiss, January 6, 2011 @ 10:48 PM (EST)

Back in the day, if you wanted to shoot a high end compact, you shot Olympus. It started with the x0x0 series and then moved to the SP-350.  However, in recent years Canon has dominated this niche with its Gx line and now its S90/95 models as well. Nikon and Panasonic have caused Canon to look over their shoulder with the Nikon P7000 and the Panasonic LX-5. Now Olympus wants back in, and they are making a big move with the XZ1.

The XZ1 is certainly designed to compete with the G12, LX5, and P7000. Firstly, and most importantly, it features a nice sized 1/1.63" sensor. It boasts 10MP and a very impressive f1.8-2.5 lens.  Keeping with the latest trends it works well in low lights and can shoot 720p HD video. Additionally, they took a page out of Canon's book and added a front and back wheel that can be assigned a number of functions for manual control.

Most importantly, Olympus announced a proprietary housing, the PT-050. I imagine Ikelite will not be too far behind as well. Welcome back to the luxury compact game, Olympus!
