The Ocean Economy Goes Mobile

Critical data from the US “blue economy” has now been made far more accessible across businesses, conservation, and recreation thanks to a global mobile app development competition which seeks to turn latent ocean data into viable services. Led by the XPRIZE Ocean Initiative, the Big Ocean Button Challenge on Herox produced 7 prize winning solutions: 1) Navisea (for Shipping and Trade), 2) FishAngler (for Fishing), 3) SeaStatus Marine Weather (for Public Safety / Integrating Multiple Datasets), 4) SeaSee (for Exploration / Education), 5) SOpHIE, the Surface Ocean pH Interactive Explorer (for Ocean Acidification), 6) Chile es Mar (Judge’s Award), and 7) Endangered Waves (for Conservation). It is hoped and expected that ocean data can ride the current wave of growth in mobile app services to help advance conservation and exploration of our planet’s oceans and waterways.
