Read into this with two doses of skepticism and call us in the morning: Nikon has re-registered the Nikonos trademark.
The iconic amphibious camera series served as a gateway to underwater photography for the better part of thirty years. And while we haven’t seen a new model since the Nikonos V circa 1984, the trademark for the brand only expired back in 2008.
Sure, Nikon technically has a waterproof mirrorless camera called the AW1. But this is far from the dedicated underwater system that was ubiquitous within the dive industry for decades. So, is this just a technicality or a promise of a re-birth? We’ll let you decide.
