Underwater photographers already have to carry quite their weight in gear when traveling into the remote reaches of the world. Why should we have to do the same with topside photo equipment? Nikon is looking to lighten the load by developing an ultra-portable, lightweight 500mm telephoto lens.
The upcoming AF-S Nikkor 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR will incorporate Nikon’s Phase Fresnel technology, which reduces the number of lenses needed while still reducing chromatic aberration.
“The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR will deliver exceptional agility and optical performance in an incredibly compact and lightweight package,” Nikon says in a press release.
We can see the benefits of this Phase Fresnel tech in the existing 300mm f/4 lens, which is 50 percent lighter and 30 percent shorter. Expect the same reduction in size for the 500mm f/5.6 when it’s released. No official pricing or availability exists yet. Check out this Nikon press release for further information.
