Nikon Announces Development of Flagship Z9 with 8K Video Capabilities
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, March 12, 2021 @ 08:30 AM (EST)

Nikon has announced the development of the Z9, accompanied by the above image of a D6-esque camera with an integrated vertical grip. The official confirmation of the full-frame camera was expected after Keiji Oishi, Department Manager of Nikon's Imaging Business Unit, UX Planning Department, told DPReview a flagship Z-series mirrorless “can be expected within the year.”

The press release (below) confirms that the camera features a new stacked CMOS sensor and a new image processor, and will offer 8K video recording—though the frame rate hasn’t been given. There’s speculation that the Z9’s sensor could be based on the same chip found in Sony’s new 8K-capable Alpha 1, which captures 8K/30p video at 10-bit 4:2:0 quality, as well as offering 4K/60p and 4K/120p 10-bit 4:2:2 recording.

Unsurprisingly, availability and pricing have yet to be announced.
