New Shrimp Species Name Up For Bid On Ebay

Editor's Note-

Now this is a cool and very unique way to raise funds. Also a neat oppurtunity to name a species.

In April 2009, this tiny shrimp, which has a tooth-looking crest and scarlet spots, was discovered for the first time in the deep waters off of southwestern Australia.

The creature normally lives about 400 meters (1,310 feet) below the surface of the ocean. And according to the March 12, 2009 article “A new species of shrimp could have your name on it,” by the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), the shrimp’s body has a “jewel like appearance.”

A picture of the shrimp species is found within this AMCS article.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society is an Australian national charity dedicated to protecting ocean wildlife. It works to create marine national parks, to save endangered ocean wildlife and to make fisheries sustainable (reduce overfishing).

In fact, University of Melbourne research student Anna McCallum, the discoverer of the new species of shrimp, stated, "Morphing from yellow to green, this species is covered in scarlet spots and sports a toothed crest across the top of its body, which gives it the appearance of having a Mohawk.” [AMCS]

The proceeds of the Ebay auction will, according to the AMCS, “… contribute to a recently launched campaign to protect our South-west oceans in a system of marine national parks.”
