Coral Reefs in Asia Pacific Infected with New Virus from Plastics

Likening it to cutting yourself with a dirty knife, Joleah Lamb of Cornell University explained how coral reefs in the Asia Pacific region have become infected. He believes plastic debris, which is now abundant in our oceans, may break off into jagged pieces and prick the reef, thereby injecting it with deadly toxins. Since corals are living animals, they are susceptible to water-borne pathogens. Making it even worse, plastic fabric covers the coral and deprives it of life-sustaining light and oxygen. Once it has infected the coral, the virus spreads across the colony with nothing to stop it, “like gangrene.”
