New Nudibranch Species Discovered in Florida
By Sandrah Gurash, April 2, 2011 @ 11:20 AM (EST)
Biologists with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), working with a team from California State Polytechnic University, have identified a new species of nudibranch, Chromodoris fentoni.
The new nudibranch was first potted by FWC biologists as part of a catch or sponges and other specimens donated to researchers by Danel Fenton, an aquarium-trade fisherman in Florida. "We were not able to identify one of the nudibranchs and realized that it was possible we were seeing something entirely new," said FWC biologist, Nancy Sheridan. "The discovery was especially rewarding because it resulted from a cooperative effort between industry and science."
