Grand Prize Winner

National Geographic has announced the winners of its Travel Photographer of the Year 2017 competition, with the grand prize going to the first place in the Nature category—a breathtaking capture of the erupting Colima Volcano, complete with lightning bolt, by Mexican photographer Sergio Tapiro Velasco.

Velasco’s image beat out more than 15,000 entries from shooters in over 30 countries. As well as the $2,500 cash prize bestowed on all the category winners, Velasco was awarded a 10-day trip for two to the Galápagos with National Geographic Expeditions.

Among the winning images were Rodney Bursiel’s awesome shot of a pro surfer at Tavarua, Fiji; a fascinating aerial picture of American crocodiles along the Tarcoles River in Costa Rica by Tarun Sinha; and Shane Gross’ remotely triggered image of Caribbean reef sharks at Cuba’s Jardines de la Reina—which appeared in Shane’s recent article on DPG, “Cuba’s Pristine Waters: A Beacon of Conservation.”
