Namibia Declares First Marine Reserve
By Matt J. Weiss, September 15, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Another marine reserve was announced this weekend--this time in Namibia. The Ministry of Fisheries will protect a 400 km long and 30 km wide area to protect.
The area is starting to manifest itself after being proposed in 2005. It consists of an all-encompassing buffer zone and then four further sub zones.
The MPA will protect the surrounding islands and has been designed to help specific shorebirds; areas of biodiversity hotspots and the over fished rock lobster among others. While Namibia is not a diving hot spot, the MPA is great step for marine conservation.
