Myanmar Starts Mangrove Restoration Project

By Matt J. Weiss, October 16, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
NGOs in Myanmar and Japan will get together in a mangrove restoration project.  The project will be focused in the tsunami-hit areas of Myanmar. The Myanmar Forest Resources Environmental Development Association is joining up with a Japanese NGO to grow 750 hectares of mangroves over 4 years.

If you follow DPG news at all, you will notice that I write a lot about mangroves. Mangroves are immeasurably important habitats for many ocean juveniles and mangrove specific creates as well as seabirds. They also are nature’s sponges soaking up a ton of water, including salt water with specially adapted prop roots. This helps alleviate many things, such as erosions and can help prevent tsunamis. It was said that mangroves prevented the Tsunami that hit Myanmar in May from damaging villages.
