Icy Antarctica, the frozen continent, is so cold and so remote that no alien species could possibly survive there, right? Well, not really, as a young Stellenbosch University postgraduate student found early on in her groundbreaking research.
This ecological detective discovered that the humble but tenacious Mediterranean mussel, a problem alien species, which has already invaded much of the Western Cape coastline, has also been hitching a ride regularly down to Antarctica and to sub-Antarctic islands like Marion Island aboard South Africa's polar research vessel SA Agulhas...
