By Matt J. Weiss, October 12, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
The worlds fisheries crisis continues. This time with one of the worlds most charismatic and overfished species -- the tuna. Apparently, 51 percent of the catch in the Mediterranean last year was unauthorized under the new regulations put in place to help the recovery of the endangered species. Obviously, the species has not recovered at all considering the new findings by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
According to ICCAT, the total catch for 2007 was estimated to be at 61,000 tonnes, despite the fact the agreed quota was 29,500. At this rate, stocks are at risk of collapsing and tuna are being fished at three times the rate thats sustainable.
