Metabones has unveiled the EF-RF Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x, which allows Canon videographers to use their EF full-frame lenses with the RF mount and reduce the 4K crop on the EOS R from a virtually unusable 1.75x to a much more wide-angle friendly 1.24x. The crop on the EOS RP is improved even more—from 1.63x to 1.15x.
Mounting an EF lens on an RF-mount camera reduces the focal length by 1.4x and thus—as the name “Speed Booster” suggests—lowers the f-number by one stop. Thus, for example, a 50mm f/2 with the adapter becomes a 35mm f/1.4. The adapter supports Dual Pixel AF, video AF, and image stabilization, and there’s a control wheel that can access functions like shutter speed and ISO.
According to Metabones, the adapter works with EF lenses by Canon, Carl Zeiss, Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. It is also compatible with Canon Extender EF lenses. The adapter isn’t designed for still photography but can be used for this purpose if shooting in APS-C mode.
The Metabones EF-RF Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x is available now for $479.
