Marine Protected Areas Mapped On Google Earth

By Jason Heller, October 29, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Editor's Note-

Here is an update on the Google Earth project that is set to map the worlds' MPAs.

If you use Google Earth at all, the International Union for Conservation of Nature just released the beginning of a comprehensive map of pretty much all of the Marine Protected Areas in the world's oceans. It is described as:

"This "Marine Protected Areas" KML file was produced through a collaborative effort between some of the biggest names in ocean conservation. On opening this KML and zooming in, you will see the locations of marine protected areas illustrated by a placemark icon. Clicking on these icons provides you with rich textual and graphical information about the specific location. Zooming in further will show the boundaries of the diverse and precious sites."

The collaborative nature of this release allows you to add photos, videos and notes. Feel free to collaborate.

You can donwload the file here
