
Mapping East Africa's Dolphins

My first encounter with a dolphin was while l was waiting at the Shimoni pier to sail across to Wasini island.
It was a split second sighting as the dolphin dived out of the water and gracefully glided back. I became fascinated from that moment on with its sheer elegance in the sea.
Subsequently, my next two encounters were in the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park just off the channel between Shimoni on the mainland and Wasini, island on Kenya's south coast, close to the Tanzanian border. This time, a pod appeared by the side of the dhow and leaped in and out of the blue water in successive split second dives, their bodies gleaming in the sun...
