Manatees Saved From Drainage Pipe
By Matt J. Weiss, September 8, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
This was not your usual "cat stuck in a tree" rescue call for Titusville police station and animal rescues, but when news came about of a manatee being stuck in a drain pipe, a team of multi agency Floridan rescuers were up for the task.
The mating pair was able to access the pipe because of high sea levels due to Tropical Storm Fay. The rescuers were able to easily coax the animals out by just leading them toward the exit.
Afterwards, a stormwater pipe repair man sledge hammered in a sign in front of the opening preventing manatees from getting in.
The animals were unharmed and there are searches being conducted to see if animals are caught in other pipes.
