The Bite of Justice: Man Sentenced for Killing Shark

By Joseph Tepper, February 7, 2013 @ 12:44 AM (EST)
Source: Pana Press

When a Great White bites a surfer, humans often seek revenge by killing  as many sharks as they can get their hands on. But now, sharks have a voice for these brutish killings.

A South African man is the first to be convicted and sentenced for killing a shark in cold blood. After gloating about his kill by posting pictures on Facebook, Leon Bekker was arrested for his actions.

Although the law banning great white killing has existed for more than twenty years, this is the first time anyone has received a sentence: one year in prison. Let’s hope this discourages similar inhumane actions in the future.
