The tidal wave of plastic bans continues with the announcement that a major U.S. food service company will ban plastic straws and stirrers. Bon Appétit announced last week that it will end the use of the disposable utensils at more than 1,000 locations the company operates across 33 states.
"The plastic problem is horrific," Bon Appétit CEO and co-founder Fedele Bauccio said in a release. "When I heard the stats and learned how much damage is being done by straws-- a product of convenience-- my gut reaction was, we have to change this!"
In 2017, Bon Appétit purchased 16.8 million plastic straws and 420,000 plastic drink stirrers. That’s a lot of plastic to phase out, which will happen in its entirety by September 2019. Customers will have the option of using paper straws instead.
