Magic Lantern Starts Work on Canon EOS R Software

Magic Lantern is working on cracking the encrypted firmware of the newly announced Canon EOS R to provide enhanced video features.

While the highly anticipated full frame mirrorless camera has an impressive spec list to begin with, the Magic Lantern software is aimed at the dedicated, advanced videographer. In the past, the off-market software has added video-friendly display overlays, uncompressed RAW, and focus stacking.

It’s possible that the software will also offer full-sensor 4K video; but as DPReview notes, “The consequences of the camera using the whole sensor area for extended recording is yet to be discovered.”

The cracking of the software is currently in the beginning stages—but the full version should be available in the coming months.
