Lifeguards on Dolphin Duty
Another good conservation story out of New Zealand. Its conservation week there, and there was an announcement that six beaches will have their lifeguards participate in a Maui's dolphin watch.
The Maui's dolphin is the worlds rarest marine dolphin, with only 111 remaining animals. It lives exclusively around the North Island of New Zealand. Nets and trawling are a continual problem for the dolphins, which are being killed off, faster then they can breed.
So in an ongoing project to protect the dolphins, WWF has enlisted the help of the lifeguards who report sightings to the research teams and include time of day, number of animals, exact location and whether there are juveniles sighted.
This information should be important to WWF's effort of saving the endangered animal. Lifeguards-saving people, saving dolphins!
