Leaked Photos and Specs Emerge of Forthcoming Canon EOS RP

It’s hard to announce anything these days without the leakers getting there first and spoiling your moment. This time, it’s Canon’s turn to get mad, with a certain Japanese camera site Nokishita Camera apparently spilling the beans about the upcoming EOS RP—the company’s second full-frame mirrorless effort after the EOS R.

So here’s what we now “know”: First, the camera body is noticeably smaller (see above)—annoying for underwater shooters who might have wanted to use one housing for two cameras. And second, there’s no LCD on the top plate like there is on the EOS R—another reason “one housing, two cameras” isn’t going to pan out. Oh, and the EOS R’s “Multifunction Touch Bar”? Gone on the EOS RP.

External appearance aside, if the leaked specs are to be believed, the EOS RP will offer a full-frame CMOS sensor packing 26.2 megapixels, as opposed to the EOS R’s 30.3-megapixel sensor; and 5fps continuous shooting, rather than the 8fps of the EOS R. Other specs and features are the same as on the “bigger brother”: DIGIC 8 image processor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Dual Sensing IS, ISO range of 100–40,000 (expandable to 50–102,400), and 3-inch swiveling LCD touchscreen. The new camera supposedly weighs less—1.07lbs (485g), with a battery and memory card, compared to 1.45lbs (660g) for the EOS R.

If you want to know if any of this is accurate, you’ll likely only have to wait another couple of weeks for the probable official unveiling at this year’s CP+ camera show. Canon may even have a surprise for you: a high-end mirrorless model boasting a 100MP+ sensor—that’s if someone doesn’t ruin the big reveal…
