Jellyfish Season To Start Earlier

Scientists are predicting that a rise in sea temperatures caused by global warming could mean box jellyfish along the Top End coast will start breeding as early as September. Projections by researchers at the Menzies School of Health Research show that 10 years from now stinger season could start one month earlier - leaving only three stinger-safe months a year. The school's Professor Bart Currie says conditions may start becoming a lot more favourable for stingers. "As the number of fish get depleted in our waters from overfishing, jellyfish actually increase," he said. "So that may be another reason to be concerned. It may be that box jellyfish increase in numbers as our fish stocks get depleted in northern waters as well"...
