Japanese Whalers Don't Meet Quota
By Matt J. Weiss, April 15, 2009 @ 01:00 AM (EST)
The cruel and unsustainable whale hunt carried out annually by Japan has come
to an end. To the delight of ocean lovers everywhere, the Japanese fleets have
come up short of their desired minke whale quotas.
The Japanese ended up catching 679 minke whales and one fin whale, well below their desired amounts of 950 minke whales and 50 fin whales over the 5 month period.
The hunt is justified by the Japanese by saying they are gathering valuable scientific information about the whales they couldn’t get without killing them. However, the whale meat is sold for consumption and the scientific justification is considered a farce.
It is being said that a significant reason they did not reach their quotas was because of the persistent efforts of the Sea Shepherd Crew, who constantly patrolled the waters and tried to prevent the ships from catching whales.
