Sharks have been overfished in North Carolina, leaving the cownose ray population to be unchecked. With no control on the cownose rays they are eating so many scallops that the scallop fishery can not be sustained.
A classic case of why concern for overfishing is not just for conservationists or animal rights activists its for everyone that benefits from the ocean. If you like to eat scallop, especially ones that come from North Carolina, then you like sharks. Or at least you should be concerned with their population levels.
There seems to be common misconception that conservationists are saving animals just for the sake of saving them. People who little interest in the ecology of the ocean, often don't understand that people fishing sharks may prevent them from eating their delicious oysters in the future. Well, in North Carolina hopefully the fisheries will work together now that oyster fishery must barricade the oysters off from an uncontrolled population of cownose rays.
