Hawaii Suspends Issuance of Aquarium Collection Permits

As a result of a Supreme Court ruling in the state of Hawaii, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources has suspended the issuance and renewal of aquarium collection permits. According to Rene Umberger, the state of Hawaii is third in line to the aquarium trade, behind Indonesia and Philippines. Umberger sued the state in 2012 over the issuance of permits.

The new ruling states that collection permits need to conform to Hawaii’s Environmental Policy Act. The Act calls for an environmental study to be conducted to determine the effects of commercial permits, which allow an unlimited number of fish and marine life to be captured around the state of Hawaii. Whether or not recreational permits are exempt from this new ruling is a matter for the lower courts of Hawaii to figure out. One recreational permit allowed for the capture of 2,000 fish per year.
