Hairy-Chested Yeti Crab, Pale Octopus Among New Species Discovered in Antarctic Vents

By Matt J. Weiss, January 4, 2012 @ 12:30 PM (EST)

Could there be a more remote place than deep water thermal vents found miles below the surface of the Ocean near Antarctica where temperature can reach 725F?  I'm thinking that's pretty much as difficult a place to get to in the entire world. It should come as no surprise then that when an remotely operated vehicle visited this area, there were a number of interesting discoveries.

Most notable were the hairy-chested yeti crabs, which not only have the best name, but also are also the "visually dominant" species.  They were said to be hanging out in numbers of 600 per square meter.

Another bizarre discovery was a pale octopus, which could be an entirely new species related to other deep water vent octopus found elsewhere.
