Gunther Diechmann's Photo Of The Week In Stern Magazine Shows Shark Finning In Bali

By Matt J. Weiss, November 14, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Our very good friend Gunther Diechmann recently had the photo of the week in Stern Magazine no. 46 of November 6th. We are happy for Gunther for this honor, however, especially happy because its circulates a telling image of shark finning in Bali to its more than 1.3 million readers. Here is the text and images from article. You can see more on his blog.

What is left from the Sharks

Photo was taken in Bali on the 8th of October in the small commercial Harbor of Denpasar, Bali Indonesia. I just happen to come across a vessel unloading not only Fish but massive amounts of Shark fins. Each time a pile of shark fins had been cleared of the deck and been trucked away by small trucks more Shark Fins appeared from the Hull of the vessel.I left the scene after about 45 minutes but the unloading continued, thousands of Shark fins of all species, I recognized Hammerheads, White Tips and Black tip sharks.I believe the man wearing the hood is due to the cold temperature in the hull, all fins had been frozen, which indicates that the vessel came from a longer trip.

However I could not get into the area where the fins been transported to by the small trucks.

Congrats to Gunther for getting his message out.
