Greenpeace Submits Evidence

Greenpeace environmental campaigners on Wednesday handed a box of meat they allege was stolen by Japanese whalers over to Tokyo prosecutors to aid an official investigation into the case.

Greenpeace said the Tokyo prosecutors office had agreed to look into a complaint it filed last week against 12 crew of a Japanese whaling ship whom it accuses of stealing the meat.

"We appreciate the sincere actions by the prosecutors to deal with the scandal over the whale meat stolen from the research whaling mission," Junichi Sato, Greenpeace Japan whales campaign coordinator, said in a statement.

"In the tax-funded research whaling programme, which is carried out as Japan's national policy, it cannot be tolerated that a group of people involved receive unfair benefits," he added.

Greenpeace last week said their four-month investigations had revealed that Japanese whalers took home whale meat from the country's annual research hunt in the Antarctic and were selling it on the black market.

It intercepted one box of meat as part of its investigation...
