U.S. governor Rick Scott is calling on state officials to review current fishing regulations in response to a video depicting cruel behavior to a shark. The video shows men laughing as a shark is pulled by a rope behind a speeding boat while the shark’s body is repeatedly slammed onto the surface of the water. The Governor is calling for new rules to “ensure such inhumane acts are strictly prohibited.”
Images of the shark’s mangled body were taken by the men and sent to shark wrangler Mark Quartiano for approval. Quartiano denounced the actions of the men. The people in the video have been identified and are under investigation and it remains unclear if they will be prosecuted.
Gov. Scott wrote in a letter to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman Brian Yablonski: “This week, an incredibly disturbing video was reported by the media showing individuals senselessly dragging a shark behind their boat at high speed. The brutality and disrespect shown to this animal is sickening and I am sure that you share my outrage over these individuals’ heinous actions.”
