Giddy-Up with the “Lionfish Derby and Rodeo”

By Joseph Tepper, August 11, 2011 @ 07:00 AM (EST)

Feeling helpless about the lionfish invasion in the waters off Florida and Caribbean? Let us introduce you to the world’s first organization dedicated to culling the invasive species in an entertaining fashion: the Lionfish Derby and Rodeo.

“Our objective is to raise awareness and help control local lionfish populations by holding competitions to capture lionfish and put them on the menu,” according to the Lionfish Derby and Rodeo website. “They are delicious to eat. We must become their predator!”

The organization hosts events like the 1st Annual Palm Beach County and 3rd Annual Lionfish Derby in the Bahamas in an attempt to cull populations and raise awareness. For more information on upcoming events or to learn a little more about this invasive species, please visit the Lionfish Derby and Rodeo website.

The explosive population of non-native, invasive Lion Fish here in Jupiter FL is a serious problem. They have a voracious
appetites, consume our juvenile groupers, snapper, crabs, and all others they can fit in their mouth. I shot one lionfish that was swallowing a rasp 2/3rds its size. They have no preditors here!!!
This Sat. Aug. 13th, our teams of 4 shooters hope to kill 1000+
lionfish at the Derby. Team "Lion Tamers", wish everyone
safe diving and maxing out on the lionfish. They really do taste like snapper! Terri Roberts
