Fisherman Saves Shark
By Matt J. Weiss, September 5, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Fishermen are often seen as the enemy of marine conservation. The face of evil. Especially in South East Asia where shark finning run rampant. However, this is ludicrous and its important we don't generalize. Fish are an important source of protein and often fishermen are key resources for scientists.
In this case, the fisherman was the conservationist. Bert Geqa, a fisherman in Davao found a stranded 15 foot whale on the beach, and rather than succumbing to peer pressure, called the authorities to help lead it back to deeper water.
Fishermen that believe in conservation like Geqa are really tremendous allies for the ocean. I am sure Geqa got little more than a pat on the back, but he certainly deserves any praise he gets.
