From DEMA : On behalf of the diving industry, we at DEMA (the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association) would like to address the story appearing in the news regarding the FBI's request to scuba instructors and dive shop owners nationwide asking them to be on the alert for suspicious individuals making "odd inquiries that are inconsistent with recreational diving."
DEMA is aware of this initiative and has been in touch with the authorities to continue to work with the special agent in charge. DEMA has been asked to contact its members in the industry and is lending its full support and cooperation to the authorities.
This is the third time this alert has been issued by the FBI since May 23, 2002 with the purpose of preventing terrorists who might use scuba divers to conduct an attack. This advisory is routine and is NOT a new initiative nor is it in response to any recent or specific threat.
According to Dave Riscinti, DEMA Board member and Owner of Blue Water Divers in Ramsey, New Jersey, "This is the third time the FBI has asked us for assistance since the events of 9/11. We are pleased to do our part for national security, and suggest all dive stores and instructors remain vigilant and notify the authorities if they notice any unusual activity." ...
