
EU Commission Considers Legal Option Over Polish Catches Of Threatened Cod

The European Commission said Thursday it was considering legal action to keep Poland from fishing for more threatened cod, saying the country had already caught its allotted share for the year.
The WWF environmental group has criticized the quota system as ineffective for keeping fish stocks at safe levels, as member states have refused to stick to scientific advise for years.
Fisheries ministers from EU member states, at a meeting in three weeks, planned to review the bloc's fisheries policy and divide quotas among coastal nations.
The EU Commission warned Poland on Thursday that its cod vessels needed to remain ashore for the rest of the year, as the country had used up its annual quota on cod from its Baltic waters...
