By Matt J. Weiss, December 19, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Cameratown.com pointed out this release from Canon about the very popular EOS 5D Mark II.  Here is the info...

December 19, 2008 -- Canon has published a statement today concerning the 'black dot' phenomenon that has plagued some EOS 5D Mark II owner's.  In the statement, Canon confirms that they are working on ways to improve and/or mitigate the phenomena and offers settings that can help reduce the problem.

Note: It does not appear that the 'black dot' issue affects everyone, as we have not been able to duplicate it on our review unit.

Here is the statement made by Canon:

To Owners of the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera :

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have indicated two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
  2. Vertical banding noise
We are currently investigating ways to improve and/or mitigate these phenomena. An announcement will be made on the Canon Website when measures to address these phenomena have been decided.
