DEMA 2008: Fantasea Line

By Jason Heller, October 25, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

Fantasea was displaying their newest additions to their line, the FP-6000 housing for the Nikon Coolpix 6000 and the Remora Flash.

Made specifically for fiber optically connected compact cameras, the Remora Flash gets its name from the top bracket mounted focus light.

It is intended to be used together with Fantasea's new Nano Focus Light, but of course other models can be attached as well. The new Nano Focus Light has a sensor in the LED head, which detects the flash output and momentarily shuts off the focus light while the flash discharges. The LED 44 light also comes with this capability. Although an interesting feature, the reality is that strobes are far more powerful than any focus light and the focus light shouldn't affect your images either way. The Remora Flash has 4 pre-flash settings, a manual power dial and a basic diffuser. The strobe takes 4 AA batteries.

Fantasea has become known specifically for their line of polycarbonate housings for Nikon Coolpix cameras. The latest and greatest Coolpix to hit the market is the 13.5 megapixel P6000. This is a high quality compact camera, and to a degree is sort of Nikon's answer to the Canon G10, only the RAW capabilities are not nearly as robust (maybe "universal" would be a better word than "robust", as the RAW files can only be viewed on a Windows PC). In lock step, Fantasea has developed a new housing for it, pictured here with the Remora Flash attached. Fantasea is pretty consistent at ensuring a housing exists for each new Coolpix that Nikon manufactures.
