By Matt J. Weiss, October 5, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
In a new journal article it was reported that the crown of thorn starfish is really four distinct species. Thought to be one species, Acanthaster planc, the coral reef predator is actually four different species after DNA studies were done on it.
The crown-of-thorns has been devastating the coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean and the study could mean different conservation tactics should be taken. The different species of crown-of-thorn may have different requirements of preferences that can help us learn more about them. Its yet to be seen if this is the case.
