“Crab Kong” Arrives in UK
The Giant Japanese Spider Crab affectionately nicknamed “Crab Kong” may not be able to swat fighter-planes out of mid-air from atop the Empire State building like his ape cousin, but the crab's arrival in a British aquarium is sure to make a splash- literally.
Weighing in at over thirty pounds, with a 'claw-span' of 8-feet, the 40-year old male spider crab was caught by Japanese fisherman off of Tokyo, and is has found temporary housing at the Weymouth Sea Life Park, before being permanently relocated to an aquarium in Germany this spring.
Marine biologist Robin James was fortunate enough to be visiting Japan when the fishermen contacted him with news of their strange find.
"Giving people a chance to witness first hand one of the many wonders of the deep oceans helps boost support for marine conservation," said James, alluding to the crab's habitat, which sits well below 1,000 feet.
Putting the acquisition in context for 'football' fans around the world, James added: "Getting in an animal as impressive as Crab Kong is the aquarium equivalent of signing Ronaldo.”
